Lyons Taxi Program continues

February 25, 2010 - (by Village of Lyons) The Village of Lyons will continue its Taxi Program for Seniors throughout 2010. The service is vital for Lyons' senior citizens to commute throughout not only the cold winter months, but also during the current economic environment. The program is made possible through the Village of Lyons and a contribution from Vulcan Materials Company McCook Quarry.

"This program has been a real lifesaver and help to many elderly members of our community," said Lyons Village President Christopher Getty. "Thanks to the reliable support of our trusted community partners, this program will continue serving senior citizens and people with disabilities in 2010."

Launched in 2000, the program allows senior citizens to pay just $1.50 for each one-way trip by subsidizing the cost of the taxi ride up to $6.50. Eligible Lyons residents are people with disabilities or people who are 60 years of age or older.

"Our senior citizens have worked to improve our community over the years and now it's time to do the same by giving back to them," said Jeff May of Vulcan Materials Company McCook Quarry. "We're happy to support programs like this that make life a little bit easier for seniors."

For cab service, eligible program passengers can contact Express Cab at (708) 863-2400 or A-Local Cab at (708) 447-4700. If you or someone you know needs this service, please contact the Lyons Recreation Department at (708) 442-4856.

How to Register for the Village of Lyons Taxi Program for Seniors:

To register, senior citizens can apply in person at the Village of Lyons Recreation Department on Mondays, between 10 AM and 2 PM. All applicants must bring a social security card and proof of Lyons residency to register. A photo ID card will be issued in person or mailed to the registrant's home.

Eligible passengers can then present the taxi driver with their program ID card before signing a "passenger ticket" which will indicate their pick-up point, destination and cost of the trip. Each passenger will also receive a copy of the ticket for his or her records.
