Law Enforcement Day

When customer drivers and law enforcement come together, everybody wins.

On Wednesday, July 15, McCook Quarry hosted its annual law enforcement day to bring customer truckers and local law enforcement officers together to promote safety.

Officers from Countryside, Hodgkins, Lyons and McCook Police Departments were on location at Vulcan Materials Company's McCook Quarry for the fourth annual Law Enforcement Day. Together with Vulcan employees, the officers educated customer truck drivers on the rules of the road and gave on-site vehicle assessments.

"It's a chance for area police officers to meet drivers in a positive way," said Western Springs Lt. David Dayhoff, a veteran of the quarry's law enforcement meet-and-greets. "We do it in a way that we don't issue tickets but we do advise them that they may need to have this or that fixed on the truck."

Law Enforcement Day is a partnership between Vulcan and the Lyons Township Quarry Advisory Council. The event was established based on feedback from Council members seeking a further discussion on truck traffic and road safety.

"We are committed to improving the quality of life in our communities," said McCook Quarry Area Manager Jeff May. "This is just one of our many community partnerships aimed at that goal."

This event is one of Vulcan's commitments to promoting safety. Each year, the "Be Safe, Be Seen" safety campaign provides local students at Hodgkins, Ideal and Pleasantdale Elementary Schools with safety glow sticks to be used during Halloween, and bicycle reflector stickers in the summer. The McCook Quarry has also been honored every year by the Illinois Association of Aggregate Production with its Rock Solid Safety Award since the program's inception in 2002.
